This inclination to eschew conventional melodic structures and embrace uncertainty across their latest material gives fans an unfiltered insight into a challenging transitional period the band found themselves in following the release of their 2019 critically acclaimed debut, Useless Coordinates.

These self-described “repetition freaks” cite psychedelic rock and minimal techno as guideposts, but—as evidenced by a band name that is Japanese for “South Germany”—they’re really obsessed with krautrock. Formed by Kyotaro Miula in 2014, they got their start playing live music on the busy streets of Tokyo. This lead to their participation in Krautrock Night, a party hosted by Tokyo Psych Fest, and later a tour of Taiwan. In September, 2015, they released their first record through the English cult label Cardinal Fuzz Records.

w/ LEFT FOR PLEASURE Blending reverb-soaked shoegaze with minimalist electronic production, the KVB's music reflected Nicholas Wood and Kat Day's mastery of atmosphere even as their sound evolved over the course of the 2010s. Early releases such as 2012's debut album, Always Then, dealt in brittle beats and sonic blasts that evoked Cabaret Voltaire and the Jesus and Mary Chain in equal measure, but the duo's style becamemore streamlined and sharp-edged on later efforts such as 2018's Only Now Foreverand 2021's Unity. ‘The Psychotic Monks 3rd album, Pink Colour Surgery (2023) is produced by Daniel Fox of Gilla Band and composed in part by improvisations, and arrives as an act of resistance to the ambient violence. Disconcerting at first sight, this new opus operates in the dark a surgery of the ethics which is fleshed out of pink for a staggering metamorphosis. Its very structure embarks us entirely in an initiatory trip full of secret corners, provided that we accept to dive into it, to plunge into it. Yet radical, Pink Colour Surgery work is truly accessible to those who immerse themselves in it in depth.

AFTERNOON SHOWS #01 / ALL GENDER, ALL AGES Any Other is the project of Adele Altro (they/them), Italian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer currently based in Italy. Their debut album “Silently. Quietly. Going Away” (2015, Bello Records) gets critical acclaim in Italy for the spontaneous indie-rock sound and the DIY attitude, and brings them on a long tour through Europe and UK. Their sophomore record “Two, Geography” (released on September 14th, 2018) comes three years after Any Other’s debut. While their first work is heavily influenced by ‘90s indie, with a strong power trio sound, their second album is much more mature, complex and original. Adele writes, sings, plays, produces and arranges all of their songs, and gets praised both from Italian and foreign press, thanks to the emotional strength of the record and a new, more mature aesthetic, filled with jazz and orchestral arrangements.

SPEEDY ORTIZ

w. J. MAHON Speedy Ortiz debuted as guitarist, songwriter & singer Sadie Dupuis’ home-recording outlet in 2011, but the solo project quickly blew up into a full-fledged band beloved around the world. The group graced festival stages from Bonnaroo to Primavera, supported heroic artists from Foo Fighters to Liz Phair, and brought acts including Mitski and Soccer Mommy on some of their earliest tours. In 2016, the band relocated from Massachusetts to Philadelphia, with the lineup changing shortly thereafter to include sonically inventive guitarist Andy Molholt (Laser Background, Eric Slick), drivingly melodic bassist Audrey Zee Whitesides (Mal Blum, Little Waist), and heavy-hitting drummer Joey Doubek (Pinkwash, Downtown Boys). Rabbit Rabbit is the first Speedy album to feature the longtime touring members as full contributors, and Dupuis and her bandmates blaze with unpredictability, their intrepid playing thrusting songs in exhilarating new directions.

SABABA 5 / sold-out

w. DJ GENERAL MIDI ‘Sababa 5’ was formed by a group of musicians known for their work for some of Tel Aviv’s top artists/vocalists, such as Gili Yalo, Ester Rada, and Liraz Charhi, as well as with famous groups like Hoodna Orchestra, Tigris, and Kutiman Orchestra. With members’ influences that range from wrecking crew recordings from the ’60s, to analog Middle Eastern music from the ’70s, the sound of the band constantly revolves around different genres and rhythms, yet, in its core, ‘Sababa 5’ is always a groove-centric band. The main source of inspiration for the band are "lehakot ketzev" (beat groups) from Israel that played innovative combinations of psychedelic rock mixed with Mediterranean Arab music during the 60’s and 70's. The fusion of East and West and the new spirit brought by the band members create a unique mix of styles that crystallize into a new and original work. The music of Sababa 5 centers around mediterranean rhythms and melodies, together with sounds from the world of rock and psychedelic funk, creating a real mix of east and west.

BIPOLAR FEMININ / sold-out

PEARL & THE OYSTERS

Pearl & The Oysters is the French-American duo of Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack. The pair met at high school in Paris and immediately bonded over their mutual love for ‘70s jazz and ‘90s space age pop. They have been writing and performing together ever since, and moved across the Atlantic together in 2015. After four years immersed in the open-minded DIY scene of Gainesville, Florida, Pearl & The Oysters headed to Los Angeles, where they connected with local artists and finished up their latest album Coast 2 Coast, released earlier this year on Stones Throw. Coast 2 Coast is a colorful cocktail of sounds and aesthetics: the swamps of Florida and sandy L.A. beaches under a mirrorball sun; a radio picking up a faraway broadcast before tuning into an oldies pop station; crashing waves that melt into the sound of Juliette’s white noise machine. Guests on the album include Lætitia Sadier (Stereolab), Riley Geare (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Dent May, and Alex Brettin (Mild High Club).

Arriving in September 2023, You Deserve Romance is a self-empowerment manifesto with crashing indie rock guitars and irresistible melodies of captivating urgency. In much the same way as Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy or Beabadoobee, Blush Always has distilled the essence of punk-inspired indie guitar music of the past 40 years with great pop sensibility. On You Deserve Romance she renegotiates the insights gained in this way entirely - for her era, from the perspective of her generation.

TCM FEST w/ Sexbeat, Suir, Mouth

Driving drums, distorted bass lines and noisy guitars, SEX BEAT is the last snotty farewell to a generation going down the drain. SEX BEAT unleash an unbridled fury, original songwriting, blunt cynicism and an energetic live show. SUIR produce reverberated shoegaze and cinematic, atmospheric music defined by dense and complex sound walls. Their rich, velvety sound constantly shifts between post punk, dark shoegaze, heavy dark wave, and psych, but due to their own sound creations, none of these genres can be unambiguously attributed.

w. TAZ CHERNILL End of Everything is the intrepid seventh album from Mega Bog, a nightmarish experimental pop ensemble led by Erin Elizabeth Birgy. Heavy grooves, metal guitar squeals, Italo disco bass lines, rhapsodic synth layers, and huge choruses stomp around the delightfully sanguine pop drama. "As tense and exploratory as a sci-fi epic, the Los Angeles musician’s new album meanders through eerie, desolate prog rock and synth-pop." - Pitchfork
